AC Milan Captain Set to Depart Club

AC Milan Captain

AC Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli is set to depart the club, according to Fabrizio Romano. Romagnoli will be signing with Rome-based giants Lazio with a contract going until June 2027. The Italian centre-back has been a Rossonero since 2015 but is now joining the main rivals of his first club, AS Roma.

He also turned down a bid from Fulham.

A Noteworthy Career

Romagnoli is certainly not leaving Milan in bad blood. Although he fell out of the squad rotation last season, he remained a leader off the pitch. He rarely saw playing time, but Romagnoli remained the Serie A champions’ captain, even with figures such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the squad.

The end to his Milan tenure was a swan song in that he finally got to lift the Serie A crown. Before Milan’s rapid improvement back to the top of Italy, however, Romagnoli was the face of the squad. He was a consistent presence in the back and one of the league’s fiercest defenders. In addition, Romagnoli also had a knack for scoring late winners that kept Milan alive in the race for European football.

Eventually, other talents such as Simon Kjaer, Fikayo Tomori, and Pierre Kalulu joined Milan. Romagnoli essentially got lost in the shuffle. With that being said, Romagnoli never complained about his playing time. Clearly, winning and doing what was best for the team was key for the Italian.

At Lazio, however, Romagnoli will get a shot at more consistent playing time. Lazio also finished fifth in the league last season, just six points behind fourth-placed Juventus. The team is certainly capable of Champions League football. In addition, Romagnoli is still just 27 years old. He’s entering the prime of his career and may very well establish himself as one of Italy’s top defenders yet again.
