Denzel Dumfries is a 6’2, 25-year-old right-back that is making waves in the Netherlands team. Quick, strong, and with an eye for goal, Dumfries is the perfect mix of offence and defence. At club level, Dumfries is utilised in a back four however, he looks more than comfortable in the right wing-back role with the Netherlands.

The Netherlands finished top of Group C with nine points from their three group games. Dumfries has been a shining star in these games as the Netherlands’ impressive run sees them qualify for the last 16. Netherlands manager Frank de Boer uses Dumfries tireless energy on the right flank of a  5-3-2 formation. The space afforded to Dumfries in this system is key to his scoring exploits. With space and freedom to rampage forward into, Dumfries is enjoying life at the Euros.

Speaking in a press conference after the game against Austria, Dumfries spoke regarding the tactical approach of de Boer: “I have just been playing my own game. In a different system than what I am used to, but a system that offers me an advantage. I get all the space I need to push forward and it has made me feel good.”

His marauding runs are now becoming a staple of the Oranje team and if it continues, they may find themselves in the latter stages of the tournament.

Denzel Dumfries: From Non-league to Netherlands International

When he was 18, Dumfries was still playing amateur football at BVV Barendrecht. Now, however, at club level, Dumfries is plying his trade at PSV Eindhoven, having joined the club back in 2018. Now the club’s captain, Dumfries is showing his talent on an international level. The rise of the youngster’s stock is slow yet steady and his performances on the European stage will surely entice transfer speculation.

Dumfries’ contract with PSV runs until 2023 and, according to Sky Sports, Bayern Munich are reportedly keeping tabs on the Dutchman. Sky Sports also reports a release clause of around €15 million is a stumbling block for Bayern. The Liverpool Echo reports that Everton are now also showing interest in Dumfries.

Mino Raiola is the current representation for Dumfries and will no doubt try to manufacture a big-money move for the player. With a somewhat low release clause, some English teams may look into Dumfries as a budget option at right-back.
