Demands an Improved Offer

Yesterday’s meeting between Sissoko and the Barcelona board failed to reach any conclusions concerning Dembele’s future at the club.

The 25-year-old and his agent don’t want to extend the contract unless an improved offer is made.

Meanwhile, Barcelona will examine if they have room to do so with financial fair play.

A Career That Stagnated

Ousmane Dembele burst on to the scene at Rennes.  Sporting Director Mikaël Silvestre made comparisons between Dembele and Cristiano Ronaldo, who he had seen arrive at Manchester United at a similar age.

The Frenchman’s success prompted Borussia Dortmund to sign him, a club world-renowned for making young talent prosper.

This ended up being yet another such success story, as Dembele won the Bundesliga’s Rookie of the Season award and a spot in the league’s Team of the Season in 2017 after recently celebrating his 20th birthday.

Barcelona signed the Frenchman in August of the same year. Dembele has had some good moments with the club, like when he scored the decisive goal against Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup, or his remarkable solo goal against Tottenham Hotspur.

Unfortunately, his career is largely characterized by injuries and a failure to live up to the enormous expectations people had of him.  However, the 25-year-old has recently given people reasons to be optimistic, as his 13 assists in the last La Liga season made him the league’s top playmaker.

The Frenchman’s struggles for the national team are more understandable. After all, it can be difficult to make a name for yourself when you’re surrounded by such staggering brilliance.

Still, Dembele would’ve probably hoped to score more than one competitive goal in his 27 matches for Le Bleus.
