Lisandro Martinez

Arsenal Step up Pursuit for ‘Butcher’ of a Defender Also Targeted by Manchester United

The race to win the signature of Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez has taken another twist with Mike Verwij of De Telegraaf reporting that Arsenal have submitted a new offer of £35 million for the Argentina international, which is an increase on their original offer of £22 million. Despite the increase in offer, Ajax does not want to lose their star defender but will find the bid hard to turn down.

Lisandro Martinez: Arsenal Increase Offer for Butcher of Amsterdam

Martinez to Bolster Arsenal

Arsenal had an opening bid of £22 million rejected by Ajax, but their determination to sign Martinez has been made clear, with them returning with an increased offer of £35 million. The Dutch champions are keen to keep hold of the Butcher of Amsterdam, but with the Gunners determined to bolster their defence, it will be hard for Ajax to keep him in the Netherlands.

Manchester United are also thought to be keen on the Argentine defender. But with their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong still ongoing, Arsenal have seemingly stolen a march on their Premier League rivals.

Martinez would offer an upgrade on an inconsistent Arsenal defence, which appeared fragile at crucial points last season. He would bring versatility to the Red side of London, and much-needed strength in depth. He is predominantly a central defender but is also comfortable at left-back. He has been an integral part of the Dutch giants’ success, winning two Eredivisie titles and one Dutch Cup winners medal in his three seasons at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

The Gunners would benefit hugely by bringing in a player like the Argentine with a winning mentality. The ‘Butcher of Amsterdam’ is not a nickname just handed out. Martinez has earned it with his performances on the pitch. He loves to impose himself on the opposition but is equally adept at bringing the ball out of defence which will suit Mikael Arteta and provide an immediate upgrade to the Arsenal defence.
