Proven Quality

The 24-year-old started his career in Argentina having come through the youth system at Newell’s Old Boys, a club famed for producing some of the best players of all time. Despite being an academy graduate at Newell’s Old Boys, the defender only made one appearance for the club.

In the 2017/18 campaign, Martinez went on loan to Club Social y Deportivo Defensa y Justicia, known commonly as Defensa y Justicia, and made 23 appearances before moving permanently to the club the next season.

After just two seasons as a regular in the Argentine league, Ajax snapped up the versatile defender. Over three seasons with the Dutch champions, Martinez made 120 appearances across all competitions and scored six goals. His stellar performances on the field saw him win the Ajax Player of the Year Award for the 2021/22 season.

Arsenal Interest

Despite missing out on Champions League football, there is an air of optimism around the Gunners this summer. Mikel Arteta has turned things around for the team who feel youthful and revitalised. Their transfer strategy has been clear – add more quality youth – which has already been kickstarted by the signing of Fabio Viera.
