Chelsea’s Official Bid for 18-Year-Old Wonderkid Imminent

The Chelsea official bid for goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina is expected to be in soon as the Chicago Fire are waiting, according to Fabrizio Romano. The bid will be around $10 million and also include add-ons.

Real Madrid showed heavy interest in the goalkeeper as well, but had their bid turned down 10 days ago. Chelsea are in the lead for Slonina.

Chelsea Official Bid Incoming for Gabriel Slonina

A Major Talent

Slonina is one of the more promising goalkeeper prospects in all of world football. He turned 18-years-old just last month, and has claimed the starting position for Chicago in Major League Soccer. He also recently committed to the United States National Team over Poland after stints with the American youth sides. This means a potential move to Chelsea can see him placed with fellow American Christian Pulisic.

This move, of course, is one for the future for Chelsea. Slonina is still a ways away from being able to start in the Premier League as well as the Champions League. That’s fine for Chelsea, however, as Édouard Mendy is at the top of his game and only 30-years-old. Goalkeepers typically age slower, so Mendy surely has a few seasons left in his tank.

It’s expected that Slonina will remain with Chicago on loan after making a move to a European club. This ensures him a starting spot to continue to develop. In addition, this starting spot can earn him a place on the United States upcoming 2022 World Cup squad. He likely wouldn’t start, since the team has Zack Steffen of Manchester City and Matt Turner of Arsenal, but the experience gained will be valuable.

Slonina is certainly an enticing prospect and a worthwhile project for The Blues.
