Newcastle United to Sign Massive Centre-Back

Dan Burn

Newcastle United are set to sign Dan Burn from Brighton and Hove Albion in a £15 million deal according to Fabrizio Romano.

Burn grew up supporting Newcastle and was keen to make the move to his boyhood club. Newcastle initially had an offer of £8 million rejected last week but returned with a figure acceptable to Brighton.

The signing of Burn will take Newcastle’s January spending to over £90 million.

Newcastle’s Centre-Back Frustrations Finally Ended

It has been a frustrating transfer window for Newcastle United. Given their current league position, manager Eddie Howe was eager to strengthen. In particular, their defence needed extra reinforcements, as they have the second worse defensive record in the Premier League.

Howe has been eager to sign a left-footed centre-back to partner Jamaal Lascelles. Their attempts to bring in the likes of Sven Botman, Diego Carlos, and Benoit Badiashile were all thwarted. However, the magpies have now successfully turned their attention to Brighton’s 6’6″ defender.

Burn was part of Newcastle’s academy as a youngster before making his professional debut at Darlington. He joined Brighton in 2018 from Wigan Athletic and has made 85 Premier League appearances for the Seagulls.

The English centre-back joins Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier, and Bruno Guimaraes as Newcastle’s fourth signing of the January transfer window.

Expect Frantic Final Day of Transfer Window For Newcastle United

After a slow start to the January transfer window, Newcastle have stepped up their various transfer chases in the last week. Despite having already spent rouhly £90 million, their activity may not be done yet.

There are still key areas that they need to strengthen to help them avoid relegation. Newcastle have been constantly linked with a loan move for Jesse Lingard throughout the window. They may try on the final day of the window to bring the England international to Tyneside, but it may be a challenge due to Manchester United’s hefty demands as well as the Red Devils’ other outgoings.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have also been linked with a loan move for United goalkeeper Dean Henderson. However, if they were to land him on a temporary deal it would rule out a move for Lingard as clubs can’t loan two players from the same team.

Whatever happens, expect Newcastle to be the busiest club on the last day of the transfer window.
