Newcastle United Set to Sign Arsenal Target Bruno Guimarães

Bruno Guimarães

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United are set to sign Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimarães. The Brazilian attracted interest from Arsenal this month, with a move failing to come into fruition. One team’s failure is another team’s opportunity, however, and the Magpies have reportedly swooped in and had a €40 million bid accepted.

Guimarães will reportedly undergo a medical once he is back in Brazil. If the deal remains on course for completion, then Newcastle will have their best signing yet.

Newfound Riches the Difference-Maker

Prior to becoming possibly the richest club in world football, Newcastle – a side battling relegation – would have stood no chance of landing a player of Guimarães‘ calibre. Now, however, they can casually bid for a player Arsenal could not afford to potentially seal a deal at the Gunners’ expense.

Eddie Howe has already welcomed Chris Wood and Kieron Trippier this month, and, as good as those arrivals are, Guimarães will be the poster boy of the new era. The Brazilian will be at the centre of Newcastle’s future.

The Lyon midfielder may just solve Howe’s greatest problem, too; he may finally provide adequate cover in front of the backline. Do that, and the Magpies should escape the drop come the end of the campaign.

With Wood firing in at the other end, too, things could begin to look promising once more at St James’ Park. The Guimarães deal is the one we’ve all been anticipating at Newcastle. The deal that proves a point; the deal that helps to flex Newcastle’s oil-soaked, rich muscles.

Come February, Howe will have no choice but to keep Newcastle afloat. He has been backed more than most managers, and must use that backing to help propel his side to safety. There can be no excuses.
