USA Desperate for a Win – World Cup Group B Final Day Qualification

USA team in the middle of the pitch after World Cup Group B match

Group B is one of the closest groups in the World Cup 2022, with every team technically having the opportunity to qualify to the next stage of the competition. Find out how the USA, England, Wales and Iran can secure World Cup Group B qualification.

World Cup Group B Qualification

England

The Three Lions of England are effectively through. To achieve Group B qualification England simply have to not lose by four clear goals against Wales. Even if that were to happen, a draw in the USA vs Iran match would keep Gareth Southgate’s side in. The English players will be feeling the least pressure of all of the teams.

Wales

Things are somewhat desperate for Wales. The only way that Wales qualifies is with a win over England that puts them level on points with the English, along with a draw between the USMNT and their Persian opposition. The Welsh are the only side relying on results elsewhere to go through in World Cup Group B.

USA

The task for Tyler Adams and his team is simple. Win. A win against Iran puts the USMNT into the round of sixteen no matter what happens in the other match in the group. A draw between the sides won’t be enough, letting Iran or Wales through.

Iran

The Iranian team require either a draw or a win. Either of these will put Iran through to the next round, however, a draw with a Wales win means that Wales take their place. To properly secure qualification, Iran will be pushing for a victory. Wales need to beat England by four clear goals for the Iranians to have any chance of topping the group.

World Cup Group B Predictions

England should have enough to beat Wales after holding back somewhat in the match against the USA, putting England at the top of the group. Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT showed plenty of promise against England, but will need better finishing to secure a result and get out of the group. Picking a more aggressive side should see the USA sneak it and take second place in World Cup Group B.
