Tyler Adams, in the USA predicted lineup, shouts to a teammate

Both the USA and Iran come into this match needing a win to progress through the group, with a draw opening the door for Wales to sneak through to the knockout stages. See the USA predicted lineup as Gregg Berhalter’s side seek a win over Iran.

USA Predicted Lineup vs Iran

How USA Have Lined-up Recently

The USA play in a variety of formations and structures. The side primarily plays in a 4-3-3, but the match against England saw a 4-4-2 in use, pressing a lot higher and limiting England in the midfield with a high press. This isn’t likely to be the case against Iran, as the Middle Eastern side prefer to sit and invite pressure from their opponents.

USA Recent Form and Tactics

The USMNT started the World Cup in a strong way, with an impressive first-half performance against Wales being masked by a late concession to a Gareth Bale penalty. This impressive football continued into the match against England, in which a more aggressive style of play forced the Euro 2020 finalists back into their own half and generated plenty of great chances.

This is likely to be the case again, with Gregg Berhalter’s side arguably not winning thanks to the lack of a number nine. This will remain a problem and introduces questions about Josh Sargent. Leeds United fanzine The Square Ball has dubbed Brenden Aaronson the “Yank Badger” for his ability to energetically press and irritate backlines, something that the Norwich player doesn’t necessarily offer.

USA Injuries to Consider

The USA seems to have retained a full squad without any injuries, with a minor disagreement in the camp around the role of Giovanni Reyna. The player insists that he is “100% healthy” in spite of being missing in this World Cup. This selection choice has caused rumours of a split in the dressing room.
