Atalanta have completed the signing of Italian U21 international Matteo Lovato from Hellas Verona. The Italian has put pen to paper on a four-year contract with an option for another year. The deal could see Lovato remain at Gewiss Stadium until 2026.

Lovato Becomes the Third Player to Join Atalanta this Transfer Window

Atalanta have confirmed the signing of Matteo Lovato from Hellas Verona. La Dea have reached an agreement with Hellas Verona to sign the centre back for a total transfer fee of €11 million. The Gialloblu will receive a guaranteed payment of  €8 million with an additional €3 million in added bonus. Padova and Genoa will share 15% of the transfer fee between each other owing to their previous sale agreements for Lovato.

The Italian graduated from the Padova academy and made his debut for the senior side in 2019 in the third division of Italian football, Serie C. Lovato’s impressive displays caught the eye of Hellas Verona. Simultaneously, the Italian also earned his first-ever call-up to the U21 national squad.

Lovato had his breakthrough at Hellas Verona last season. The defender made full use of the void left by Marsh Kumbulla, who moved to AS Roma on loan at the start of the 2020/21 season. The defender established himself as a regular in the first team, making 24 appearances for Hellas Verona last season as they finished 10th in Serie A.

The Potential Replacement for Cristian Romero?

Matteo Lovato arrives as the potential replacement for Cristian Romero. The Argentine’s future at Atalanta is in doubt with Tottenham Hotspur keen to add the central defender. Romero is keen on joining the English side but both sides are yet to reach an agreement over the transfer fee of the 23-year-old. The arrival of Lovato increases the chances of Tottenham Hotspur finally signing their target.
