Liverpool’s ‘Hidden Jewel’ Called Up to England Squad for First Time in Four Years

Gareth Southgate has called up Joe Gomez to the England squad for the March camp, after impressing during Liverpool’s injury crisis. Other interesting call-ups include Jarrad Branthwaite, Cole Palmer, and Anthony Gordon.

The announcement took place on Thursday 14 March at 2PM GMT.

The March international break is the final chance for international managers and their teams to prepare ahead of the European Championships in June. England’s first match will be on March 23 when they host Brazil at Wembley Stadium.

Gomez is part of a squad that contains just one natural right-back, in Kyle Walker. Reece James and Trent Alexander-Arnold are both injured, meaning Gomez should see some valuable minutes.

Liverpool’s “hidden jewel” has not been in the squad since 2020. He has played just 11 games for England, debuting in 2017. However, Gomez has appeared for England at four different youth levels: U16, U17, U19, and U21.

Gareth Southgate was the man who gave the Liverpool player his England debut in a match against Germany.

The hybrid defender will be keen to impress and secure a spot on the plane to Germany this summer for the Euros. He is a natural centre-half, but can play as a left-back or right-back: this versatility could be valuable in an international tournament.

With Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas missing large portions of the season, and Trent Alexander-Arnold still injured, Gomez has had an important role to play: featuring in 39 games already and starting nine out of the last ten league fixtures.

He impressed at left-back when there was no other option, and provided an important option to rest Conor Bradley, who has also been having a fine season.

This campaign has been the 26-year-old’s best in recent years, and a call up is well deserved. His role has been crucial in keeping Liverpool in the title race, as they sit joint top with Arsenal on 64 points.
