Express Sport also mention that Lavia is seen as an alternative to Ugarte, with the club maintaining contact with the midfielder’s representatives since the failed pursuit in 2022. Joe Shields the Co-Director of Recruitment and Talent at Stamford Bridge joined the club from Southampton and is proving a key driving force behind Lavia being so highly thought of at Chelsea. According to the report, Shields has reached out to the Belgian internationals camp to sound out his interest in moving to Stamford Bridge with the Saints hopeful of collecting a fee of £45 million for the midfielder.

Qualities Lavia Would Bring to Chelsea

Lavia has impressed since joining Southampton from Manchester City on July 5, 2022, for £10.5 million. Throughout his time in the City academy and during his spell playing for the Saints – the Belgian international has established himself as a tenacious ball-winning midfielder. He has a great engine, which means he can be deployed further forward, but his best qualities have been shown at the base of the midfield.

Lavia is adept at receiving the ball under pressure and distributing accurately from there, which would free up Enzo Fernandez to venture further forward. The Belgian international is also impressive at evading the press and skating away from opposition players. He often makes himself available to receive the ball, which would be great for Chelsea.
