Interest Confirmed: Tottenham Eyeing Possible Move for £190K-P/W ‘Dominant’ Leader

Harry Maguire

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a possible summer move to sign Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, claims The Telegraph’s Matt Law. This comes after the Lilywhites confirmed the arrival of new manager Ange Postecoglou from Celtic.

Spurs Believe Maguire Could Make Harry Kane Stay

Maguire saw himself move way down the pecking order at Old Trafford last season after the arrival of Lisandro Martinez from Ajax, as he barely got to start any important Premier League matches under Erik ten Hag.

Law adds that there is no potential for Spurs even entertaining the prospect of swapping the English defender for Harry Kane, who is reported to be the Red Devils’ number one transfer target in the summer. Instead, it’s stated that Spurs actually believe that signing Maguire could be a potential way for them to convince their captain to stay beyond the summer – which is because of Kane (who became Spurs’ all-time record top goal scorer last season) having reportedly asked the club to sign Maguire in the past and that the pair share a close relationship with each other at the international level.

It’s further added that Tottenham have not made any indication yet that they will even make a bid for Maguire, who was signed by United back in 2019 from Leicester City for a whopping £80 million. Irrespective of that, they remain interested in the centre-back and it’s stated that the Lilywhites will start planning their summer recruitment after appointing a new sporting director.

What Lies in the Future for Maguire?

At this point, it’s still not assured whether Spurs will even push on to sign Maguire and take a step forward in their interest over him. It was reported last year itself that Ten Hag was planning on selling the centre-back in the upcoming summer window as the next part of his rebuild process at Old Trafford.

Maguire actually has a pretty good CV for a footballer. He’s a regular for the England national team, has captained United for many games and has plenty of top-flight experience under his belt. However, his error-prone reputation doesn’t help his case for being sold for a prominent fee and not many clubs would be eager to match his rumoured £190,000-a-week salary either.

The 30-year-old defender, who was hailed for being ‘dominant’ last season by Ten Hag, made 31 appearances in the previous campaign for the Red Devils – which included just eight Premier League starts.
