Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Antony on a five-year deal from Ajax, with the option of an additional year, keeping him at Old Trafford until at least 2027.

The Brazilian has joined United for a fee of £86 million. He played under manager Erik ten Hag throughout his time at Ajax before the Dutchman opted for a Premier League switch. The Old Trafford boss was keen to reunite with his former prodigy, which has resulted in a lengthy pursuit for the Brazilian attacker.

Antony Provides a Young and Exciting Addition to the United Squad

In Amsterdam, he won two consecutive Eredivisie titles and the KNVB Cup. Last season Antony hit double figures for goal contributions across all competitions; netting 12 and assisting 10 goals in 33 appearances.

He is a skillful player, recognised for his remarkable ability to take on his man successfully and dribble past opponents. His speed also helps, as he can make attacks devastatingly threatening for defenders once he receives the ball. The 22-year-old was so keen on a move to Manchester, he skipped numerous training sessions to force Ajax’s hand in overseeing his departure.

United began their 2022/2023 campaign where they left off from the previous campaign. Their first two games saw them concede six goals, after a 2-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion and a 4-0 loss to Brentford, they finished the second match-week in 20th place – rock bottom of the league table.

The Red Devils form has picked up; they defeated rivals Liverpool 2-1 in a triumphant win at Old Trafford and picked up a 1-0 win against Southampton, securing their first clean sheet.

Ten Hag has further bolstered his squad this summer with the additions of Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez – the latter being a former teammate of Antony. The Argentine was awarded United’s Player of the Month for his stellar performances at the end of August.

They face 20th place Leicester City on Thursday, September 1 at the King Power Stadium, who are seeking their first win of the campaign. However, due to finalisation of the transfer, Antony is likely to make his first appearance for the Reds against Arsenal.
