Fabrizio Romano: Arsenal in Deadline Day Pursuit of Aston Villa Key Midfielder

Arsenal are making a deadline day move for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Romano also reported that the situation is “not an easy deal” but that the player is “keen on the move”. The Athletic have confirmed Arsenal are preparing an offer.

Mikel Arteta’s side are looking to reinforce their midfield options after his squad have suffered a number of injuries, more recently to Mohamed Elneny.

The club sit on top of the Premier League table and remain the only team with a perfect record after achieving five wins in five games. New arrivals will only strengthen Arteta’s pursuit of silverware and Champions League qualification this season.

Aston Villa Reluctant to Sell but Player Will Push

Villa are reluctant to let the 24-year-old leave and have insisted he is not for sale, however, Luiz is keen to make the move to north London. Steven Gerard’s side faced defeat to the Gunners on August 31 and admitted post-match that he was “not in control” of keeping the Brazilian at the club.

West Midlands Side in Turmoil This Season

The West Midlands side are 19th in the league and have only acquired three points out of a possible 15. They have lost four games so far and fans are requesting the board to relieve Gerrard of his duties as manager.

Luiz joined Villa in 2019 after previously representing Manchester City in 2017. He has since made 107 league appearances including four in the 2022/23 campaign so far, in which he has contributed a goal.

Although it’s only the fifth match-week, Villa are currently stuck in the relegation zone and show no signs of being able to maintain form or display an attacking threat.

If the decision is ultimately left to Luiz, it’s clear why he may choose to pursue a transfer to Arsenal, who look a promising side to rival the top spot this season.
