Lucas Ocampos

According to Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf, the transfer of Lucas Ocampos to Ajax is now in doubt. The club’s supervisory board have reportedly intervened and put an end to what they consider an expensive and irresponsible transfer.

Ajax Have Doubts Over the Potential Transfer of Lucas Ocampos

Move In Doubt

In a sensational turn of events, the supervisory board of Ajax has refused to sanction the move for Sevilla’s Lucas Ocampos. The board feels the transfer fee and the wages of the 28-years-old is quite unattainable for a player entering the twilight of his career. The Amsterdam-based team had already reached an agreement in principle with Sevilla and the Argentine, as per Fabrizio Romano but now the deal is in possible jeopardy.

The intervention by the commissioners is quite remarkable as Lucas Ocampos was already in Amsterdam for his medical examination before the blockbuster move. The player has since returned to Seville and the technical staff of Ajax also flew to Spain to apologise to the player’s camp.

Possibility of the Deal Returning on the Cards

The chances of the deal being closed is considered quite slim at the moment. The transfer will only happen if Gerry Hamstra, together with Edwin van der Sar and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, still manage to convince the controlling body today. And of course, if Lucas Ocampos who would be quite disappointed by the turn of events, is still interested in the move.

There would be consultations today amongst the Amsterdam hierarchies on the details of the transfer. The board may still decide to sanction the transfer or even move on immediately to other alternatives before the end of the window.

Hard Blow for Alfred Schreuder

This twist in the transfer would come as a hard blow to coach Alfred Schreuder. The Dutch manager was angry at the club for letting Antony leave for Manchester United this late in the window. He already had to deal with the losses of Sébastien Haller, Lisandro Martinez, Ryan Gravenberch and other first-team regulars.

With Lucas Ocampos, Schreuder was getting a high-quality replacement for Antony. But with the deal now in doubt, the manager will have a lot of questions to ask.
