FC Barcelona Veteran Sergi Roberto is Staying for Another Season

A Valuable Depth Piece

Roberto made his first team debut with Barcelona in 2010, 12 seasons ago. He hasn’t moved anywhere since, not even on loan. In short, he bleeds Barcelona colours through and through.

Although not often used anymore, Roberto remains a valuable piece. Last season he appeared in nine La Liga matches, scoring two goals and providing one assist. He also made three Champions League appearances.

Roberto’s best statistical season came in 2017/18, where he scored one goal and provided seven assists in 30 La Liga matches.

Due to Roberto’s experience with the club, it’s important for club manager Xavi to keep him on board. Roberto knows what it means to play for Barcelona and will translate that to the club’s newer players. There’s a reason why Roberto is Barcelona’s third captain.

Roberto is also a very versatile player, playing a plethora of different positions while with Barcelona. He primarily plays in the central midfield, but can also play both fullback positions, defensive midfield, and on the wing if desperately needed.

Chatter surrounding the potential departure of Frenkie de Jong continues to heat up as well. For this reason, it makes sense why Barcelona decided to retain depth by renewing Roberto. With Dani Alves seeing his contract expire as well, Roberto will also provide right-back depth.
