Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United Receive Barcelona’s Verdict on Latest Frenkie de Jong Offer

Frenkie de Jong

The latest twist in the Manchester United Frenkie de Jong transfer saga is here. Fabrizio Romano has weighed in on the situation to confirm that Barcelona have rejected United’s opening bid for the player.

Romano had this to say on the situation: “Manchester United have made an opening proposal for Frenkie de Jong after talks started June 1. €60m plus €10m add-ons…Barcelona have turned down this opening bid – but clubs remain in contact….De Jong has never indicated his desire to anyone. He’s still waiting.”

Transfer Saga

This transfer has already been through a number of twists and turns, rivalling that of Kylian Mbappe from earlier this window.

United first had to fend off other interest, then there were obstacles, and then De Jong supposedly stated a desire to join United, although now Romano has said this isn’t true. The two clubs are still apart in their valuation of the player.

The deal is one that is likely to go through eventually as Barcelona need money but they’re going to make life difficult for Manchester United who in turn need the player.

United Desperate for Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United are desperate to please new manager Erik ten Hag and as such want to deliver his first major target.

The midfielder played under Ten Hag at Ajax where he first rose to prominence after coming through the youth ranks at Willem II. In 2019 De Jong made a big-money move to Barcelona and has been a regular fixture in Spain ever since, making 140 appearances for the club in three seasons.

Frenkie de Jong is noted for his ability to play with the ball at his feet and can play a variety of roles sitting in front of the defence, he has also received plaudits for his dribbling abilities which can drive his team up the field.
