Barcelona Remain Confident in Ansu Fati

Ansu Fati

Barcelona remain confident in the star potential of young winger Ansu Fati, according to Fabrizio Romano.

When asked about signing a new “superstar” this summer, club president Joan Laporta praised Fati.

“We already have a superstar and his name is [Ansu] Fati – we’re waiting for him,” Laporta said. That is certainly high praise for the youngster.

With this being said, Barcelona are no strangers to major transfers. They’ve already completed a move for a star midfielder and are hot on the trails for a new centre-back.

A Great Start

First and foremost, Fati is only 19-years-old. Proving his worth at a club as massive as Barcelona at that age is already a major accomplishment in itself.

He broke out in the 2019/20 season when he was just 17-years-old. In 24 La Liga appearances that season, Fati found the back of the net seven times and provided one assist. Fati also scored his first Champions League goal that season. He also had the luxury of playing and learning alongside an all-time great in Lionel Messi. Messi, of course, would’ve served as an excellent teacher to Fati, but he moved elsewhere to Paris Saint-Germain.

Unfortunately, injuries have slowed down Fati’s development. He only appeared in seven La Liga matches last season, where he scored four goals and assisted once. He did notch yet another Champions League goal as well.

This season, Fati holds three goals and one assist to his name in five league matches. The production is clearly there when he’s on the pitch, but the issue is holding back injuries.

Barcelona will make it a priority to keep Fati healthy. He changes the whole scheme of the attack, which can be very successful should another player full of potential remain. If knowledgeable manager Xavi has faith in a young player, one can assume said player will be successful.
