Chelsea Women Fail to Break Down Juventus Defence in Champions League

On matchday five of the Women’s Champions League, Chelsea women and Juventus women battled it out with precious points on the line. At the end of 90 minutes, the game finished goalless despite Chelsea carving out a number of great chances throughout the game.

This marked the first time that Emma Hayes’ side has failed to score a goal since May when they were beaten 4-0 in the Champion’s League Final by Barcelona. Chelsea’s failure to score is mostly down to the quality of the Juventus defence, particularly former Arsenal stopper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin who had a masterclass in the goal.

Chelsea had 72 per cent of possession in the game and managed to turn that into a number of chances with 25 shots attempted. Only five of those shots were on target with Juventus often getting bodies in the way or going agonisingly wide of the goal. Sam Kerr especially will be upset she didn’t score as she had a couple of gilt-edged chances that a player of her quality would normally put away. Despite only facing five shots on target, the Juventus goalkeeper Peyraud-Magnin was forced to pull off some top-class saves to keep Chelsea from breaking the deadlock.

The Story of Group A

Chelsea now have a three-point advantage at the top of Group A, ahead of Wolfsburg and Juventus who both have eight points to their name. Chelsea are away to Wolfsburg on the final day of group stage action. Juventus take on Servette which will essentially grant them three points, making Chelsea’s match a real battle for qualification. In addition to their three-point advantage, Chelsea have a better goal difference which should make it difficult for them to be knocked out of the top two slots in the group, so long as they avoid the defensive calamities that marred their first encounter with Wolfsburg,
