The Spaniard Joins Marseille After Months of Speculations

Olympique Marseille have completed the signing of 24-year-old full-back Pol Lirola from Fiorentina. The Spaniard joins the club on a five-year deal until June 2026. The clubs are yet to disclose the exact details of the transfer fee, but according to Fabrizio Romano, Lirola joins Marseille for a transfer fee of €13 million that will see Fiorentina receive a guaranteed sum of €6.5 million with the other €6.5 million in add-ons.

Lirola made his debut in 2014 with the Espanyol reserve team after graduating from their youth academy. The Spaniard caught the eye of Juventus and moved to the Italian giants a year later. The full-back moved then out on loan to Sassuolo just days after joining the Bianconeri.

Lirola made his top-flight debut in 2016 with Neroverdi, two years after playing for the Espanyol youth side in the Spanish third division. Despite joining in 2018, he never got his chance at Sassuolo, and moved out on loan a season later, joining Fiorentina before making the move permanent.

The 24-year-old struggled to get starts last season and went on loan for the third time in his career, joining Marseille during the second half of the last campaign. Lirola quickly became an integral part of the first team. He played 22 matches for Marseille, scoring two goals and making four assists.

Marseille Focussing on Young Players This Transfer Window

Marseille have been very busy this transfer window. The French side have invested heavily in young players this summer. They have signed five players on permanent deals, while four have arrived on loan until the end of the season. Of all the players to have joined Marseille, only Luan Peres is above the age of 25. While the remaining eight are 24-years or younger.
