Former Liverpool Manager Joins Everton

Despite Carlo Ancelotti leading Everton to a disappointing tenth place finish in the 2020/21 Premier League season, there was still a feeling from the board of Bill Kenwright, Farhad Moshiri and Marcel Brands that he was the right man to take the club forward with the ultimate aim of breaking into the top four and winning qualification for the Champions League.

The lure of Real Madrid was too much for Ancelotti and, after a search for a new boss, Everton have finally secured the services of Rafa Benitez.

Everton had held talks with Nuno Espírito Santo, but no deal was reached with the former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager, while former boss David Moyes was rumoured as being a potential target but he ultimately signed a new three year deal with West Ham United. However, can Everton fans welcome a former Liverpool manager into their hearts?

Benitez brought success across Stanley Park, delivering the Champions League to Anfield, but his job at Goodison Park could be an even bigger challenge. Benitez left Liverpool 11 years ago and has since managed Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Napoli, Chelsea and Newcastle United, as well as a stint with Chinese side Dalian Professional.

Benitez still has a home on Merseyside and wanted to return to the area where he always felt comfortable, but he will need to start fast to win over the fans of Everton, a place he once called “a small club.”
