Manchester United will make a swoop for Leon Goretzka if they end up letting go of Paul Pogba, according to Christian Falk.

Leon Goretzka Identified as Manchester United Target if Paul Pogba Leaves

Leon Goretzka Has Shone for Bayern Munich

The 26-year old has been excelling in Germany for Bayern Munich and has helped his side claim three Bundesliga titles on the bounce despite joining them as a 23-year old.

Now 25, the player is one of the most talented midfielders in Europe and is drawing admiring glances from far and wide. One of those teams is Man United, who are considering potential replacements for Paul Pogba.

The Frenchman has long been embroiled in a case of ‘will they/won’t they’ in regards to whether the Red Devils are going to sell him or not and once again, it has reared its head this summer transfer window.

Pogba Impressive During Euro 2020

Pogba was impressive for France during the ongoing Euro 2020 tournament but his country were dumped out of the competition by Switzerland in the Round of 16. Now that he can focus on club football again, his future will be in question.

If Pogba does decide to leave Old Trafford and pursue some football elsewhere, then it is Leon Goretzka who Ole Gunner Solksjaer is eyeing up as the likely replacement for him. The German international is unlikely to come cheap, however.

Goretzka Started Out as a 17-Year Old at Bochum

Leon Goretzka made his debut as a young 17-year old in his native country for Bochum in the 2.Bundesliga. Despite his youthfulness, he played in 32 games that year and managed nine goal contributions. It was enough to warrant a Schalke move and he continued to go from strength-to-strength.

He spent five seasons with the side and racked up well over 100 appearances for them during his time there. After helping the club reach second place in the Bundesliga table – and narrowly missing out on the title – he left to make his move to current side Bayern.

It’s with Munich where he finally got his hands on the title and his contributions have only grown and increased. He’s already scored more goals in three seasons with Bayern than he did during his entire time at Schalke and has done the same with his assists.

Leon Goretzka Would Be a Key Outlet for Manchester United

In fact, Goretzka ranks as one of the best providers of goals from any midfielder in the top five leagues with a rate of 0.25 non penalty goals per 90 – which puts him in the top three percent. His non-penalty expected goals is only slightly lower, with a rate of 0.20 per 90.

He would certainly offer United an extra outlet in a midfield and forward line that already contains the likes of Bruno Fernandes in attacking midfield, with Marcus Rashford on the wing and Edinson Cavani up front.

If Pogba was to leave the club then, it certainly seems like Leon Goretzka would fit the bill in terms of playing style and the level of talent he could offer to the club. However, this of course all depends on if the sometimes brilliant Frenchman decides to finally depart the Old Trafford club.
