Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Austrian defender David Alaba. He joins on a free transfer having come to the end of his contract with Bayern Munich. He leaves the Bavarian giants having helped them to an astonishing 27 trophies during his time at the club – including ten Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues.

A Host of Clubs Interested

Once it was understood that Alaba would not be staying at Bayern past this season, the interest of many of Europe’s elite clubs was piqued. Premier League sides Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea all held some level of interest in the 28-year-old, with City keen to have him included in the deal that saw Leroy Sane leave them to join Bayern.

Other European sides in Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus were also said to be interested. However, given the state of football finances as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, many clubs decided to back away from the deal due to the high wages that Alaba would command.

Not Real Madrid, though. Alaba is set to earn €25 million a year gross on his deal that runs until 2026 – working out to around £412,000 per week.

He will be unveiled as a Real Madrid player after Euro 2020 has finished.

Alaba’s arrival at the club comes just one day after Zinedine Zidane resigned as manager of the club. Real suffered a disappointing 2020/21 season, going trophyless and seeing city rivals Atletico Madrid claim the La Liga title.

Former Inter Milan and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is currently in the frame to replace him in the dugout at the Bernabeu, despite his reported interest in the Tottenham Hotspur job.
