Dynamo Moscow Set to Sign AC Milan Left-Back Diego Laxalt

Diego Laxalt

According to Daniele Longo of Calciomercato, Uruguyan left-back Diego Laxalt will depart AC Milan and continue his journey in Russia for Dynamo Moscow. Milan are in need of a deputy left-back, but clearly, Laxalt is not in the management’s plans.

The Quality of Diego Laxalt

Laxalt has had a successful career thus far, both for club and country. He signed for Milan in 2018 and was an often-used player in the 2018/19 season, but never did quite enough to convince the team he had a future there.

The following season he was loaned out to Torino, but rarely played. Last season, he was on loan at Celtic. Although he showed his quality at times and even scored a goal, Celtic decided not to pursue a permanent deal.

Milan needs another left-back with Diogo Dalot returning to Manchester United. Even last season, Dalot was deployed at both fullback positions as Milan never quite found a top choice to back up Theo Hernandez.

Laxalt’s journey with Milan, however, is coming to an end after only playing one full season, even though he was technically a member of the team for three. Now his future awaits him in Russia.

Milan’s Other Left-Back Options

Hernandez is Milan’s starter. That is not going to change. Now that they are back in the Champions League, they’ll need to build depth. Hernandez plays the bulk of the matches, and almost always the full 90 minutes, so they will need reinforcements for rest reasons but also injuries.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Milan are on the hunt for Barcelona’s Junior Firpo.

Firpo holds 24 Barcelona league appearances under his belt, along with two goals. Originally born in the Dominican Republic, Firpo represents Spain internationally (up until the Under-21 levels at this point). He is young, talented, and ready for a chance to prove himself.

His energetic and attacking style also fits well with Stefano Pioli’s preference for fullbacks. Firpo plays in a similar style to Hernandez, making him a strong option.

There has been little news on the pricing, however. Milan’s priorities remain in upgrading the starting team to make it Champions League quality. Depth options will likely come second.
