Georginio Wijnaldum to Reject Barcelona in Favour of Paris Saint-Germain Move

Georginio Wijnaldum

Despite looking almost certain to complete a move to Barcelona, Georginio Wijnaldum looks set to reject the La Liga club in favour of joining Paris Saint-Germain. The news, as reported by Fabrizio Romano, comes as a shock to many, with PSG high jacking the deal in a couple of days. Meanwhile, it deals a huge blow to Barcelona who are seeking to rebuild with a catalogue of free agents this summer.

The change of heart, admittedly, doesn’t seem to be for football reasons. According to Romano, PSG have simply offered double the salary compared to Barcelona’s offer. It raises questions as to why Liverpool failed to come to an agreement on a contract extension. Perhaps it was just a case of Wijnaldum’s demands being too high.

The Leader That PSG Need

It was evident last season that PSG lacked a real experienced leader. Thiago Silva was gone and, therefore, so was his expertise. Add on to that the exit of Edinson Cavani and it’s no surprise the Frenchmen failed to make big moments count.

Signing Georginio Wijnaldum could change that, however. The Dutchman was known as the ultimate big game player at Liverpool. He scored a brace in the space of ten minutes in the Champions League semi-final to knock Barcelona out in stunning fashion. On top of that, a year before, he netted against Roma to send Liverpool to a final they ultimately lost.

The midfielder even scored the goal to take them back to the Champions League in 2017 against Middlesbrough. Where there is a big game, there is a Wijnaldum goal. If PSG can unlock that big game player, they will undoubtedly reclaim their Ligue 1 crown and potentially realise their dream of a historic European night.
