Duane Holmes and Jack Marriott to Depart Derby County

Derby County’s Duane Holmes and Jack Marriott hare both set to depart the club, reports Ryan Conway and Nancy Frostick of The Athletic.

Conway has revealed that USA international Holmes is close to completing a switch to Huddersfield Town, while he and Frostick say that Marriott is to return to Sheffield Wednesday on loan.

Holmes’ Spell Comes to an End

Twenty-six-year-old Holmes signed for Derby back in 2018 under Frank Lampard, joining from Scunthorpe United.

In two-and-a-half years with the club, he made 76 appearances, scoring six times.

He has been a consistent performer for Derby since his arrival, despite some injury struggles.

He was part of the side that reached the Championship play-off final under Lampard and remained largely in the side during Philip Cocu’s reign.

Conway reports that Holmes, whose deal was up in the summer, has been frustrated at being played out of position this season, preferring to play through the middle rather than out wide.

Marriott to Return to Wednesday

Striker Jack Marriott spent the first half of the season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday but returned to Derby when he suffered a calf injury before Christmas.

Since the new year, though, the 26-year-old has trained with Wayne Rooney’s squad and has been given permission to return to managerless Wednesday.

His return will be a big boost to the fellow Championship strugglers, who are in the market for numerous strikers in this window.

Speculation remains around the future of Josh Windass, who has been linked with a move to the Premier League with West Bromwich Albion as well as other clubs in the Championship.

His departure would leave Wednesday short up front – enough where Marriott on his own would not be enough cover.
