Leadership in The Face of Crisis

And, like Gerrard, Henderson has become the epitome of what Liverpool fans expect from a captain both on and off the pitch. Just recently, the Liverpool midfielder was praised after playing a vital role in the launch of the players together idea, an initiative that aims to help the NHS amid the Chaos of the coronavirus.

Bournemouth captain, Simon Francis, revealed the extent of the Liverpool captain’s involvement in the creation of the initiative, stating: “Henderson called each of us captains individually last week to explain his donation plan and everyone quickly got on board. He led our zoom conference calls .” Francis went onto to name Henderson the “captain of all captains” after the incredible work from the Liverpool skipper alongside the rest of the Premier League’s captains.

The Right man for England?

And it’s this leadership and ability to pull everyone together in the face of a crisis that any team would welcome when it comes to the captain’s armband and something that Gareth Southgate should also welcome. Jordan Henderson has become the perfect role model for all footballers and fans in England and in doing so, made a strong case for the England captaincy.

England would also be getting an experienced winner in naming Henderson as captain. The Liverpool midfielder has led one of the best teams in the world to three trophies, including the Champions League, and will soon lift his first Premier League title- there is simply no better candidate for the captaincy. Henderson’s is a winner and leader on the pitch as well as off it, even in the face if a crisis.

The former Sunderland man’s importance to what is a world-class Liverpool side was highlighted when the Reds were without their captain due to injury. The league leaders went four games without their captain in February, losing their first league game and exiting the Fa Cup in the process. It was clear in those losses that the Reds lacked their usual fight and spirit that Jordan Henderson helps to provide every week.

With that said, Jordan Henderson’s pitch for the England captains armband couldn’t be any more convincing after his efforts both on and off the pitch this season.
