Marcelo Bielsa’s side could miss out due to the outbreak in the coronavirus.

All elite football has been suspended until April 3 as a result of the pandemic; however, the outcome of the season has come under intense speculation.

A number of Championship sides have reportedly met to discuss opening a ‘legal battle’ if the current season is declared void.

It would mean Leeds United and West Brom, who currently occupy the promotion spots, may be denied a return to the top-flight.

Meanwhile, Fulham, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Preston North End would have the chance to get promotion via the play-offs taken away from them.

At the weekend, West Ham United vice-chairman Karen Brady said in her weekly Sun newspaper column: “The only fair and reasonable thing to do is declare the whole season null and void.”

But Chris Sutton says that Leeds United deserve to be promoted to the top-flight.

“I understand clubs will always look out for themselves,” he told the Monday Night Club (via Leeds Live).

“The issue is money, if there was no money everyone would accept that Liverpool are champions and Norwich City, Aston Villa and Bournemouth would be unhappy but would accept relegation.

“The fact of the matter is there is so much money involved which is why there will be these legal ramblings. Leeds deserve to come up. I know they have to get over the line but who knows where we are going to go with this.”

Sutton, now a football pundit, believes the current standings should be frozen – only if the remainder of the season cannot be played out.

The 47-year-old made nearly 100 appearances for the Canaries before retiring with Aston Villa in 2007.
