More Than Local Pride at Stake in the First Merseyside Derby of the Season

Merseyside Derby

Liverpool welcome Everton in the first Merseyside derby of the season on Wednesday. Jurgen Klopp’s team are imperious at Anfield, while Marco Silva desperately needs a win with Everton hovering dangerously above the relegation zone.

More Than Local Pride on the Line in Merseyside Derby

Adrian Will Start for Liverpool

Liverpool host Everton with the bragging rights and the local pride of the city on the line. However, defeat for the Toffees could end Marco Silva’s reign as Everton manager. The dreaded vote of confidence has been given to Silva, but he desperately needs a result in the Merseyside derby.

In contrast, Liverpool are flying high after another victory on Saturday; a 2-1 win at home against Brighton & Hove Albion that extended their unbeaten run and increased their winning streak to five. Klopp will fancy heaping more misery on their local rivals but will be without Alisson for the next three games after his red card on Saturday. Adrian will start on Wednesday hoping to keep a clean sheet, something the Reds haven’t done in 12 games.

With their hectic fixture list, Jurgen Klopp could rotate his team. Naby Keita, Adam Lallana, Joe Gomez and James Milner could come into the team on a massive night for both clubs in a must-win Merseyside derby.

Richarlison Will be the Player Liverpool Must Keep Quiet

Everton head to Anfield desperately needing three points. Marco Silva is feeling the heat and, for now, the players are with him. They played well at Leicester City but still walked away with nothing. Richarlison is Everton’s go-to player, with the Brazil international currently Everton’s top scorer. His battle with the Liverpool centre-halves could be key in Everton’s chances of sneaking a result.

Liverpool must keep the Brazilian quiet. His versatility in the forward areas could cause them problems, especially with the onrushing full-backs. Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren will expect a busy night against the talented, pacey forward.

The Reds’ front three will fancy their chances against a shaky Everton defence. Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah will pull the Everton defence apart and keep Jordan Pickford busy. The Merseyside derby is always full of drama and it could be a busy night for referee Mike Dean.

Expect a Passionate Merseyside Derby

It will be a night of tension and drama as the city of Liverpool battles for local bragging rights and pride. Expect a tight contest between the two clubs. Furthermore, the last four Merseyside derbies have produced just three goals as defences have come out on top. Can Liverpool extend their run winning run to six games, or can Everton secure just a third Premier League win at Anfield and ease the growing pressure on Marco Silva? Expect a passionate, fiery game and atmosphere at Anfield.
