Ligue 1 Predictions: Third Meet Second as Angers Welcome Marseille

Welcome back to the Last Word on Football’s previews and predictions for Ligue 1. We have reached the 16th round of games, where second and third clash as Marseille travel to Angers while Paris Saint-Germain host Nantes while Lyon and Lille meet.

Ligue 1 Predictions

Angers Welcome Marseille

Marseille travel to Angers looking for a fifth straight league win. Andre Villas-Boas’ team can close the gap to two points on Paris Saint Germain, while Angers are looking to bounce back from their heavy loss to Nice.

Marseille are motoring nicely after a perfect four wins from four in November. They head to Angers knowing victory sees them close in on PSG. However, 2016 was the last time Marseille won in this part of France.

Stephane Moulin will demand a response from his team following their capitulation against Nice. Angers have won just twice in the last eight games. Its also been 40 years since they beat Marseille in a home league game.

Rudi Garcia Welcomes Former Club

Lyon welcome Lille on Tuesday evening. Both teams are locked together in the table with 22 points and both Rudi Garcia and Christophe Galtier will be aware this is a crucial game as both chase the Champions League places.

Lille head to Lyon with the worst away record in Ligue 1. They are yet to win on their travels and that must be addressed. They have amassed just two points on the road. Galtier’s team are struggling for form winning just once in their four games, but they have a good record in Lyon, collecting eight points from their last four visits.

2014 was the last time Lyon secured a home win over Lille. Garcia’s team are in good form having won four of their last five games.

Angers v Marseille

A crucial game between second and third. Angers have lost just once in their last four. Marseille have won four in a row. A tight game between two usually solid teams

Angers 0-1 Marseille

Bordeaux v Nimes

Paulo Sousa’s Bordeaux has found some form going unbeaten in four games. In contrast, Nimes are desperately for a win having gone eight games without a win. Overall, its just one in ten games for Nimes.

Bordeaux 2-0 Nimes

Brest v Strasbourg

Two sides locked together in the table meet. Brest had a disappointing November collecting just one point from their four games. Olivier Dall’oglio’s team need a win. Strasbourg will be seeking a response following defeat to Lyon. Strasbourg will be pushing for a third win in four games.

Lyon v Lille

Two teams chasing the Champions League places clash. Lyon has won four of their last five games. They have collected 13 points from Garcia’s six league games. Lille boast the worst away record in Ligue 1 but head to Lyon on the back of a much-needed win

Lyon 2-1 Lille

Amiens v Reims

The honeymoon period is over for Luka Elsner. Amiens have lost their last three games conceding 11 goals. Overall, it’s one win in six for Amiens and they need something to spark their season. Reims are going well in the top half but are winless in five games. Something has got to give on Wednesday night

Dijon v Montpellier

In form Montpellier head to Dijon looking to extend their unbeaten run to six games. They have won two of their last three games. Dijon’s home form has improved, and they will be hoping to make it three straight home wins.

Metz v Rennes

Metz need to start collecting wins and fast. The home side have won just three league games. However, they are proving tough opposition having drawn their last four games. Rennes will be high on confidence having won three of their last four games.

Metz 2-2 Rennes

Paris Saint-Germain v Nantes

A fully refreshed Paris Saint Germain welcome Nantes. Thomas Tuchel’s team have won six of their last seven league games. Victory could see their lead extend to eight points. Nantes are fresh off a crucial win against Toulouse.  That win stopped their rot of disappointing results.

Saint Etienne v Nice

Claude Puel will demand a response against his old team. Puel suffered a first league loss since taking over Saint Etienne at Rennes. Their overall form is good winning five of the last eight league games. Nice will hunting consecutive league wins for the first time since August.

Toulouse v Monaco

Toulouse are in rotten form losing five games in a row. Antoine Koumbouare’s team are desperately short on confidence and form. Monaco travel to Les Violets hunting a fourth win in six games.
