An agreement has been reached with Wolves set to lose midfielder João Gomes to local rivals Aston Villa. According to Fabrizio Romano, Villa have agreed a deal worth an initial £34.6 million plus a further £4.3 million in performance-related add-ons, taking the overall package to approximately £38 million. Wolves have reportedly authorised Gomes to leave the pre-season training camp in Portugal to undergo a medical after accepting the offer.
The transfer represents a significant piece of business for Unai Emery’s side as they move quickly to strengthen their midfield options. Villa recently sanctioned the departure of Youri Tielemans, and Gomes is expected to arrive as a direct replacement in the centre of the park.

Wolves Set to Lose Midfielder: João Gomes Set for Aston Villa Switch as Wolves Agree £38m Deal
Atlético Madrid Deal Collapsed Before Villa Move
The move to Villa comes after Gomes appeared destined for Atlético Madrid earlier this summer. Multiple reports indicated that Atlético had agreed a deal with Wolves worth around €40 million and had also settled personal terms with the Brazilian international. However, the transfer unexpectedly collapsed despite being nearly complete.
Brazilian outlets reported that tensions emerged between Atlético Madrid and influential agent Jorge Mendes following Bernardo Silva’s surprise move to Real Madrid. Mendes was involved in negotiations relating to both players, and Atlético’s frustration over the Silva situation reportedly led the Spanish club to withdraw from the Gomes deal. Romano has since echoed those claims.
Wolves Set to Lose Midfielder: A Key Signing for Villa
At 25 years old, Gomes arrives with extensive Premier League experience despite Wolves’ relegation from the top flight last season. Since joining Wolves from Flamengo in January 2023, the Brazilian has made 116 appearances, scoring seven goals and registering six assists. He established himself as one of the club’s most consistent performers and remained a standout figure during a difficult 2025/26 campaign.
Known for his ball-winning ability, energy and tactical discipline, Gomes should fit naturally into Emery’s high-intensity midfield setup. Villa’s willingness to invest close to £40 million underlines how highly the club rates the Brazil international as they prepare for another campaign competing at the top end of the Premier League table.
Barring any late complications during the medical process, Gomes is expected to become Aston Villa’s latest summer signing in the coming days, bringing an end to a transfer saga that looked set to take him to Spain only a few weeks ago.
