Nunez and Salah Deals Crucial to Solidifying Jurgen Klopp’s Attacking Core
The Merseyside club made a statement of intent by signing the Uruguayan striker for a club-record £85 million fee (including add-ons). They even managed to beat arch-rivals Manchester United, who looked to be interested in the deal but were quickly overtaken once Jurgen Klopp started pushing for the move. Nunez scored in his official debut in the 3-1 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield final and has a high potential ceiling for the future.
Liverpool brought in Nunez as a replacement for Sadio Mane, who was granted his wish to join Bayern Munich after feeling like his time at Anfield was done. The Reds were also at risk of also potentially losing Mohamed Salah for pennies next year, with his contract set to expire.

However, almost out of nowhere, they announced that the Egyptian forward had signed a three-year contract to extend his stay until at least 2025. Salah was handed a major £350,000-a-week salary to become the club’s highest-paid player – a deserved reward for scoring 157 goals in his five years with them.

Of course, Nunez is not the only signing made by the Reds this summer. They have also signed promising young midfielder Fabio Carvalho from Fulham for just over £5 million as well as Scottish right-back Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen for over £4 million. These are acquisitions made for the future as Klopp aims to continue building a legacy for years to come.
Liverpool have also sold some players that were not needed by the club anymore. Young right-back Neco Williams was sold to Nottingham Forest for £18 million, while Takumi Minamino, who failed to properly adapt to the Premier League, was sold to Monaco for over £13.5 million.

The Merseyside giants also sold midfielder Marko Grujic for £8 million and defender Ben Davies for over £4 million. All these smart sales have helped them keep a clean net spend and not risk financial fair play punishment for the future. They’re in a strong position to compete for the Premier League and Champions League titles next season after the summer window, which is why Romano has called it perfect.
