Napoli to Extend Giovanni Di Lorenzo Contract

Napoli are set to extend the contract of defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano. The right-back is reported to be close to a new one-year extension to his deal that currently expires in 2025, meaning he would stay with the club until 2026.

Interest From Elsewhere

Per Romano’s tweet, there had been interest from Premier League club Manchester United in signing the 27-year-old. He would have provided stiff competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and United’s other right-back options.

However, his agent insisted that there had been nothing concrete with United and thus his stay with Napoli looks to be prolonged.

Di Lorenzo has been with Napoli since 2019 when he joined from fellow Italian side Empoli.

In the same year, he made his debut for the Italy national team and he recently became a European champion with the national side, beating England in the final of Euro 2020.

Di Lorenzo started the final as Italy went on to beat England on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Wembley.

His contract extension at Napoli is likely a reward for his top performances throughout Euro 2020 as well as his general importance at club level – his versatility is key for Napoli, able to play at centre-back or as a winger.
