The Turkish International Could Seal Sensational Move

Having made 172 appearances for Milan since signing from Bayer Leverkusen for €24 million in 2017, Calhanoglu’s next possible destination will come as a shock to many. A mainstay in a Milan side that has risen in recent seasons, few could have predicted that such a move was on the cards for the Turkish international.

Despite entering talks with Milan over a contract extension, no agreement could be reached. Consequently, Calhanoglu will refuse a new deal with the Rossoneri, in order to move to Inter after his current deal expires next week, per Fabrizio Romano.

Although the signing is yet to be officially confirmed by Inter, Romano stated that Calhanoglu will sign a contract with Inter until 2024.

A Shock Move From Hakan Calhanoglu

This new, controversial venture may well be a welcome one for Calhanoglu, after he was part of the Turkey team that crashed out of the group stage at Euro 2020. Despite being tipped as pre-tournament dark horses, Turkey lost all three of their matches to Italy, Wales and Switzerland, finishing rock bottom of Group A.

Having failed to win a trophy whilst at Milan, the prospect of joining Serie A champions Inter could have been the decisive factor behind Calhanoglu’s move, one that is sure to shake up an already hostile cross-city rivalry between the two Milan clubs.

The prospect of losing a key player to a major rival will incense Milan fans, who have not seen their side win a Serie A title since 2011. Even though they finished second to Inter in last season’s Serie A, they ended up 11 points adrift of Antonio Conte’s men.

The loss of Calhanoglu, who could follow in the footsteps of Antonio Cassano by opting to go directly from Inter to AC Milan, may be symbolic of a growing power-shift between the two sides. On the back of last season’s circumstances, the completion of such an unexpected transfer would not go down well in the red half of Milan.
