Poland striker Robert Lewandowski will miss the World Cup Qualifier against England due to a knee injury. The 32-year old striker suffered damaged ligaments in his knee in the win against Andorra on Sunday.
Robert Lewandowski Set to Miss England Clash With Knee Injury
Ruled Out of World Cup Qualifier
The Polish FA stated on Monday that the Bayern Munich forward. It read: “Robert Lewandowski will not play on Wednesday’s 2022 World Cup qualifying match against England in London due to an injury.”
“Clinical and imaging studies have shown damage to the collateral ligament of the right knee. The short time remaining until the next match of the national team excludes the participation of the national team captain in this match.
“This would carry too much risk of aggravating the injury. This decision is the only right one, bearing in mind the upcoming Euro 2020 tournament.
“Treatment of this type of injury usually lasts from five to 10 days. Therefore, Robert Lewandowski will return to the club, where he will undergo further rehabilitation.”
Poland’s record goalscorer and the captain will miss an important week for club and country, with RB Leipzig looking to close the gap in the league.
Lewandowski has returned to Germany for further treatment and is set to miss important clashes for his club, including against Leipzig in the Bundesliga. However, they also face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League four days later. The Bayern Munich player has been the most prolific striker on the planet this season, scoring 35 goals in only 25 games, twelve ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, who sits in second.
Poland are currently tied for second on four points with Hungary, with England sitting on top of the table. But without the 32-year-old, who is an integral component of the squad, the task is made tougher.
After scoring a brace in the 3-0 victory over Andorra, the former Borussia Dortmund striker has scored 42 goals and provided eight assists in 36 games this season as he closes in on Gerard Muller’s goals record.
Lewandowski vs Harry Kane Shoot-Out
With Robert Lewandowski set to miss out through injury, the much an anticipated shoot-out between Lewandowski and Harry Kane is set to be left until the European Championships in the summer.
Both talismanic forwards have created big chances for their sides, while also taking the most shots in their respective leagues.
Kane’s 17 goals are slight below half of the Polish strikers, with Lewandowski also having a better conversion rate of 30.7% compared to the England striker’s 17.53%. They are an integral component to both their sides as they lead from the front; both players are important creators and finishers,
Harry Kane has made a total of 13 assists this season including four in one game. As well as this, he has also made 17 key passes that have led to 30 chances. The Bayern Munich striker, on the other hand, has six assists with 15 key passes, which have lead to 21 chances leading to goal scoring opportunities.
England currently lead the group after winning both games, while Poland drew 3-3 away to Hungary before beating Andorra. However, Robert Lewandowski will have to wait longer to score against the Three Lions, who he has failed to score past on two occasions.
