Inter Milan defender Diego Godin‘s proposed move to Cagliari is very close, with an agreement almost found. Inter will then sign Arturo Vidal from Barcelona after Godin’s departure, Fabrizio Romano reports.
Godin will leave Inter as a free agent and sign a three-year contract with the Cagliari.
Diego Godin Close to Cagliari Move Ahead of Pending Arturo Vidal Arrival at Inter Milan
Godin Leaving Earlier Than Planned
Former Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin is set to leave Inter Milan just over one year after joining when he signed a three-year deal.
Godin, 34, arrived with bags of experience to his name and gave Antonio Conte another option in defence, where he favours a back three.
The Uruguayan defender made 36 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A runners-up, scoring twice for the Nerazzurri.
Whilst the hype in recent years may have been around Milan Skriniar, Stefan de Vrij appeared to receive much of the plaudits for the Italian side in the last campaign.
It may be that Aleksandr Kolarov‘s arrival from AS Roma will see him slot in alongside the pair at centre-back.
This would leave Godin with little option but to leave the famous black & blue outfit, should he wish to play regularly. Cagliari could provide him with that opportunity.
Inter Milan had been linked with the signing of Marash Kumbulla, but the Albanian defender has since made the move to Rome.
Important Transfer Window
This is an important transfer window for Antonio Conte’s side. Having finished a whisker behind Juventus at the end of last season, they have the opportunity to build on their performance and bridge the gap. Juventus have also parted ways with Maurizio Sarri, launching into the unknown by appointing Andrea Pirlo as manager, a former player with very little managerial experience, if any.
Aside from the obvious talent on display in Turin, they had found themselves in a three-horse race for the title for quite some time. It suggests that when the machine isn’t spinning perfectly, they could well be there for the taking. Inter Milan will have to be ready and they’d probably prefer to force it anyway, rather than take advantage of a demise of the Old Lady.
Arturo Vidal Arrival Imminent
Following Godin’s departure, Arturo Vidal will arrive from Barcelona. Antonio Conte is a big fan of the midfield engine. The move would also see Vidal reunited with Chile teammate Alexis Sanchez at San Siro. Sanchez made his loan move from Manchester United permanent in the last months.
Fabrizio Romano reports that a deal to sign Arturo Vidal is already complete and will be announced after Godin’s exit.
Conte and Vidal have previously worked together at Juventus.
