Fabrizio Romano details that Diego Simeone’s side will attempt to sign Suarez if he leaves Barcelona, as expected, over the coming days.
Luis Suarez: Atletico Madrid Still Keen on Striker
Uruguay Striker Rejected Inter Miami Offer
David Beckham’s MLS franchise Inter Miami were reportedly willing to make Suarez the highest-paid player in the history of their league. The player, however, has no interest in moving to the United States. Instead, he would prefer to stay in Europe.
Sky Sports News recently reported that Suarez is currently attempting to obtain an Italian passport, which would allow him to replace Higuaín at Juventus. Atletico’s interest would therefore give the player a choice between staying in La Liga or instead moving to Serie A.
Suarez Leaving Barcelona at The Right Time
Uncertainty continues to surround Suarez’s current club Barcelona, despite Lionel Messi‘s renewed commitment to the club. President Josep Maria Bartomeu could now face a vote of no confidence that would see him leave his post earlier than anticipated, if successful.
Having served a full two terms, Bartomeu is scheduled to depart in March. Declining performances on the pitch, coupled with the club’s floundering economic situation, means the 57-year-old may not even last until then.
Bartomeu is still primed to facilitate the departure of Suarez, however. The 33-year-old joined from Liverpool in 2014 and has since scored 198 goals for the Catalans. Among his haul of trophies with the club are four La Liga titles, four Copa del Rey trophies, as well as the Champions League success of 2015.
