A big part of a footballer’s life is fan engagement. Be it via social media, in their personal lives, or through engagements organised by their club. Some footballers are known to engage with fans more than others and enjoy the interaction that the likes of social media and meet and greets bring.
However, in this day and age, some are not just footballers, they are brands, and it is in their best interests to keep fans onside as best as they can. It can also be the small things that matter, like an autograph, a photo, or a quick chat that can make a fan’s day.
Here, we look at five footballers known to engage with fans and in one way or another and excel at what they do.
Five Footballers Known to Engage With Fans
Kylian Mbappé
The Frenchman, widely regarded as one of the best in the world has managed to stay humble and stay connected with fans despite his status as a world-famous footballer and playing for two of the biggest clubs on the planet in Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
A huge social media online service presence, his Instagram account has 123 million followers, and Mbappe is happy to engage with fans both off and on the pitch. In one game, a pitch invader came onto the pitch just to hug his hero. Many would have let security do their job but Mbappe was happy to oblige. He has also checked on fans who have been hit with misplaced balls while at a game and made children’s dreams come true by meeting him. One example is Mbappe flying a sick child to Madrid to meet him, watch a game, meet other players, and simply spend some time with them.
Cristiano Ronaldo
The most famous footballer in the world. Cristiano Ronaldo has done it all and has it all; however, he has never forgotten the fans. The Portugal international star, as of September 2024 has reached one billion followers on social media.
On X (formally Twitter) Ronaldo posted a message to his fans. He said: “We’ve made history — 1 BILLION followers! This is more than just a number – it’s a testament to our shared passion, drive, and love for the game and beyond.
“From the streets of Madeira to the biggest stages in the world, I’ve always played for my family and for you, and now 1 billion of us stand together. You’ve been with me every step of the way, through all the highs and the lows. This journey is our journey, and together, we’ve shown that there are no limits to what we can achieve. Thank you for believing in me, for your support, and for being part of my life.
The best is yet to come, and we’ll keep pushing, winning, and making history together.”
The superstar also has his very own official mobile app where fans can engage with their hero like never before.
Marcus Rashford
Happy to engage with fans as many others would, however, Marcus Rashford does not stop there. He has worked tirelessly to help not only fans of his but others too. His work outside of football has been praised by many, setting up the “In The Box” campaign to help homeless people over the festive period. He also teamed up with a food waste charity to deliver meals to those not receiving free school meals in the Greater Manchester area. These are just two examples of Rashford helping and engaging with fans who look at him as a hero.
Marcus Rashford is a footballer willing to give back to the fans be it in a small way via an autograph to making himself available for Q&A’s or something much bigger that may go unnoticed by some.
Jude Bellingham
Whether it’s inside or outside of a football stadium, Jude Bellingham always has time for fans. Be it a photo, autograph, chat or a surprise visit, no gesture appears to be too much for the Real Madrid youngster. Social media is filled with videos of Bellingham unselfishly taking time to have a moment with fans.
Even when having a bad day at the office, Bellingham remains classy. In a game for Real Madrid, the England international was sent off late in the game and was visibly annoyed with the referee’s decision. However, after the game, as fans waited to meet their hero unsure if he would engage with them, the midfielder took time out to speak to each fan, take photos, and sign autographs. Despite only being 21 years old, Bellingham shows maturity, not just on the pitch but also off it.
Álvaro Morata
As with many footballers, it is a duty to engage with fans; however, Alvero Morata went a step further and married one. The Spanish star was meeting fans, but when one fan asked for an autograph, his whole life changed. Fast forward a few years, they were married and have had four children together.
