Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate and Arne Engels formed a midfield three.

Meanwhile, Nicolas Kuhn, Kyogo and Daizen Maeda completed the front line.

Celtic’s Recent Form and Tactics

Wednesday night was a milestone moment for the Hoops. For the first time in twelve seasons, they reached the knockout stages of the Champions League. Typically, they didn’t do it the easy way.

The game should have been out of sight in the first half. Kyogo – linked away with a move to Rennes – had three strikes disallowed meanwhile Engels missed from the spot. Should the Japanese forward complete his move, it will be fascinating to see the tactical changes to the Celtic system. The thirty-year-old embodied the high intensity of Ange Postecoglou’s team, when he enjoyed his best two seasons. Now, will Rodgers bring in a player of a similar ilk? Or look to increase the strength and physicality up top.

Late on, Adam Idah forced an error which led to Benito hitting the ball into his own net and Celtic Park erupted into a scene of green and white joy. It was a special moment for the Irishman who has struggled since returning to Celtic on a permanent basis.

Moreover, a flurry of transfer rumours has left Celtic fans feeling mixed emotions. A likely sensational Jota return comes with the cost of losing Kyogo, while the Kieran Tierney stories linger on.
