How Bayern Munich Have Lined Up Recently

The vital 1-0 win against Union Berlin on Wednesday evening was one that the Bavarians paid for dearly. No less than three key players had to leave the field injured. Two others are still away on international duty, which complicates the situation even more regarding squad depth.

Bayern started the game against Union with Manuel Neuer in goal, as Raphael Guerreiro and Konrad Laimer played in the outside back positions. Dayot Upamecano played centre-back alongside Matthijs de Ligt. Leon Goretzka returned to the lineup in his holding midfield role next to Joshua Kimmich. Meanwhile, Kingsley Coman, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané, and Harry Kane made up the front four. Eric Dier replaced the injured Upamecano at halftime, thus making his Bayern debut. The English defender will now be unable to ease into his new team and instead be needed instantly.

Bayern Munich Recent Form and Tactics

Of the three games since the resumption of play after the winter break, Bayern have won two and lost one. In terms of tactics, they tried a different shape in those first two matches, a 4-1-4-1, but against Union, they reverted back to their usual 4-2-3-1. In the pre-match press conference, coach Thomas Tuchel admitted he will stick with the latter for now.

Given that there are no other options, he even told reporters that he plans to play Dier next to de Ligt in the centre of defence while putting Aleksandar Pavlovic beside Goretzka in the holding midfield role. With the players missing at present, the side almost selects itself.

Bayern Munich Injuries to Consider

Upamecano, Kimmich, and Laimer join Serge Gnabry, Bouna Sarr and Daniel Peretz on the injury list. That is quite tragic, considering the importance of the games coming up for the team between now and early to mid-February. As noted above, Kim Min-jae and Noussair Mazraou remain away with their national teams.
