Exclusive – ‘Under the Radar’ Strategy Begins as Leeds United to Sign ‘Versatile’ International in Key Role

‘Done Right Now’: Fabrizio Romano Drops Huge Leeds United Update as Star’s Transfer Saga Finally Complete - Luis Sinisterra

In an interview today with Last Word on Football (to be released in full shortly), Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post noted that Leeds United have completed an agreement for Chelsea’s Ethan Ampadu “under the radar”, with Phil Hay noting an agreement has been reached between the sides. News of the club’s interest initially leaked just hours ago.

Leeds United Embrace ‘Under the Radar’ Transfer Strategy in Ethan Ampadu Deal

Leeds United Agree Fee with Chelsea for Ethan Ampadu

Whites fans are due something of a transfer boost in the coming days after The Athletic’s confirmation that an agreement has been reached between the Peacocks and Chelsea. Ampadu is renowned for being a highly “versatile” player, with lots of experience as a centre-back, defensive midfielder and even right-back. Having such flexibility in the squad is essential for Daniel Farke, who will look to pick up high-quality players for affordable prices in this window.

At first glance, Ampadu will take over right centre-back duties from Robin Koch, with the German leaving Elland Road to play in the Bundesliga. The defender is still just 22 years old, but has amassed over 40 caps for Wales.

Change in Transfer Strategy

Signing the Welshman indicates a significant shift in Leeds United’s transfer strategy, as the Whites’ ability to keep moves under wraps in recent windows has been minimal. Last summer’s deadline day saw pieces written about Cody Gakpo, Bamba Dieng and eventually Wilfried Gnonto, who made his way to the club after a stressful 24 hours at Elland Road.

On the contrary, 49ers Enterprises’ strategy thus far has been much more quiet. The Elland Road hierarchy is experiencing relatively few leaks, with the speed of negotiations for the Welshman indicating steps in the right direction.
