Expectations for Burnley in the Premier League

Vincent Kompany celebrates - how well will he do with Burnley in the Premier League?

After a dominating campaign in the Championship, title winners Burnley have earned promotion after just one season of being in the second division. Now that the Clarets are back in the Premier League, it is necessary to analyze the club’s performance from this season, as well as their financial situation to determine what we can expect from them next year.

Transitioning Back to the Premier League

Burnley have done exceptionally well on the offensive and defensive sides of the pitch. Currently, they lead the Championship in both goals scored (84) and goals conceded (35). This is a remarkable achievement considering the quality and quantity of departures that occurred last season. Dwight McNeil, Nathan Collins, Nicolas Pope, James Tarkowski, Maxwel Cornet and Ben Mee are all currently playing on Premier League teams and were cornerstones for the Clarets when they were in the top division.

Not only did their replacements earn Burnley the title this year, but they spent £38.2m while bringing in £76.46m resulting in £38.26m of profit. If Vincent Kompany stays as manager next season, he will aim to keep the foundation he has created within the club while using the additional funds to add the talent necessary to compete against the other top flight teams.

Outside Help

With the announcement of former NFL star JJ Watt’s investment in the club, it appears that Burnley will have a new avenue of revenue. The Championship winners released the news that Watt and his wife Kealia “have such great respect for what has been built here by Alan, Vincent and the entire organization and are looking forward to working with them”.

He went on to say “Burnley is a special club with incredible supporters and we want to help continue to elevate its global profile on its return to the Premier League.” If JJ and Kealia wish to promote the club’s appearance on an international scale, avoiding relegation next year will certainly be a priority for them.

Courses of Action

With the profits that the club have accumulated by selling their former players, alongside the money they have made by earning promotion, plus the new influx of revenue provided by the Watt’s, the Clarets should have the proper financial capabilities to pay for the players that will give them the best chance of staying in the Premier League.

Of course, the competition will be tougher, but if the team can keep Kompany as their manager, and spend their funds on the right talent, then the club will have a great chance to succeed in their first season back to the Premier League much like Fulham and Bournemouth are doing now.
