What Alonso Said About His Managerial Future

It was recently reported that Spurs have added the ex-Liverpool midfielder to the list of possible targets as they continue their search to find a permanent successor to the sacked Antonio Conte. The Lilywhites have had three different managers this season, with Cristian Stellini being sacked last month after a flurry of poor results.

However, Alonso seems disinterested in being linked to an exit from Leverkusen and the possibility of taking up the Spurs job. When asked about the links, he said: “I’ve been in football for many years, rumours are normal but we still have a lot to achieve. That’s why my head is 100 per cent here for the last few months. And my head is also 100 per cent here for next season.”

The Lilywhites are yet to indicate when a new permanent manager will be unveiled as the players aim to end a difficult season in a strong fashion. Apart from Alonso, it has also been reported that former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann is keen on becoming the next Tottenham manager.

Alonso’s Impressive Transition From Playing to Managerial Career

Xabi Alonso made his name as a player, winning titles with the likes of elite clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. The Spaniard had the reputation of being a witty midfielder, who won multiple league titles, the UEFA Champions League as well as the FIFA World Cup in an illustrious career.

After hanging up his boots in 2017, Alonso started to work towards becoming a manager. He found his first coaching chance at Real Sociedad, taking charge of their reserves side for a few years. He only took over as the Leverkusen manager last year but has impressed with the German club and gotten them playing some wonderful attacking football – earning the praise of his players with Jeremie Frimpong praising him as a ‘very talkative’ manager.

Bayer Leverkusen are currently preparing to play in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals and have a major chance of lifting the title.  Since taking over Leverkusen earlier this season, Alonso has won 17 of the 31 matches he’s managed and helped them score 60 goals during that period – helping him earn a reputation for being an exciting up-and-coming manager and attracting attention from major clubs.
