Oxford United

The first week without Karl Robinson for Oxford United and there have been several candidates to take the role.

However, results on the pitch continued in negative fashion with yet another defeat for the U’s.

Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Manager Candidates and Another League Loss

Former U’s Coach in Contention for Manager Role

Former Oxford United coach Des Buckingham is a contender to take the vacant mangers position at the club, according to Football Insider.

Karl Robinson was sacked on Sunday after a run of seven defeats in eight games, leaving the U’s just five points clear of the bottom four.

Buckingham, who was part of Chris Wilder’s coaching staff, has been hugely successful during his time with the City Group.

The Oxford-born manager won the A-League grand final with Melbourne City as assistant manager during the 2020 campaign and, more recently, won the Indian Super League League Winners’ Shield with Mumbai City as head coach.

Former Cardiff City Manager ‘Keen’ on Oxford United Position

Former Cardiff City boss Steve Morison was the latest managerial rumour to take the reins at Oxford, according to Football League World.

The reports claims the 39-year-old is “keen” to take the role just six months after he was dismissed by Cardiff.

The former Millwall striker, who oversaw 16 wins from his 45 games in charge of the Bluebirds, has seen his odds shortened after revealing his interest.

No Manager But Same Result

Oxford’s poor form continued despite Karl Robinson no longer being involved at the club.

The U’s suffered an eighth defeat in nine games with a 1-0 loss on the road at Lincoln City.

Sam Long conceded a penalty in the first half but, despite a spirited second 45 minutes, Oxford were unable to get back into the game.

The result leaves the club just four points clear of the relegation places.

Charlton Boss On Oxford Shortlist

Oxford then identified current Charlton Athletic manager Dean Holden as an option to replace Karl Robinson, according to reports.

The 43-year-old, whose contract expires in the summer, has made a positive start to life at the Valley.

Now, the U’s, who have suffered eight defeats in their last nine league games, could look to swoop in and bring him to the club.

However, the Addicks are looking to extend his current deal, but ongoing conjecture over Charlton’s ownership has left negotiations at a standstill.

Assistant coach Scott Marshall left the club last week and while Holden has “maintained harmony among the playing staff”, he may be looking for something more secure.
