Manchester United Vying for New Right-Back Signing in January

Jeremie Frimpong Among United’s Potential Candidates

The Red Devils need another right-back that can compete with Diogo Dalot, who has finally become a regular at Old Trafford and featured in every single one of their 14 matches across all competitions this season. Plettenburg adds that the signing of a new full-back is of utmost importance for Erik ten Hag in the January transfer window, as he preferably wants a young defender who can suit his playing style.

A name that has been mentioned for a winter transfer is Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong, who is enjoying an impressive season in the Bundesliga. The 21-year-old defender has scored five goals in 11 league games so far this season, proving himself as a prolific attacking right-back.

United believes that the Dutch defender has all the qualities needed to give strong competition to Dalot as well as a new option for them in the right-back position. The ex-Ajax manager is probably looking for more attack-minded full-backs that can help create more genuine goal-scoring chances and help his side’s forward players soar.

Frimpong’s Career So Far Summed Up

The young right-back spent a chunk of his youth career with United’s rivals Manchester City. He came through their academy and played for both their U19 and U21 sides before leaving for regular football in 2019 when he joined Celtic. Frimpong spent two seasons with the Scottish side, helping them win a domestic treble in the 2019/20 season and was praised as an ‘outstanding talent’ by ex-Celtic manager Neil Lennon last year.

Frimpong joined Leverkusen for more competitiveness last year and has been one of the Bundesliga’s brightest young defenders over the last few seasons. He’s scored seven goals and provided 12 assists in 62 appearances for the German side – with his exciting performances catching the eye of the decision-makers at Old Trafford – who are not contemplating a move for him in January.
