Napoli Closing in on Prized Serie A Striker

Giovanni Simeone

Napoli are closing in on a deal for Giovanni Simeone of Hellas Verona, according to Fabrizio Romano. They are working on a loan deal worth £2.96 million (€3.5 million) with a permanent buy option of £10.1 (€12 million).

Although Simeone is partially known for being the son of Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone, he’s also a strong Serie A striker with international appearances for Argentina.

A Much Needed Addition

Napoli’s attack has been decimated this summer. This isn’t great news after Napoli finished third in the league last season, behind AC Milan and Inter Milan but ahead of Juventus. Other Serie A teams have also strengthened, such as AS Roma adding both Paulo Dybala and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Lorenzo Insigne departed to Toronto FC. Dries Mertens left to Galatasaray. Both were major players in Napoli’s attack for the past several seasons. This left players such as Victor Osimhen and Hirving Lozano as I Partenopei‘s best options. These are decent options, but more help is needed.

Simeone brings this help. He scored 17 goals and provided six assists in 35 matches for Verona last season. He spearheaded Verona’s vicious attack that outscored the likes of Juventus. The 27-year-old is right in his prime and has shown that he’s ready for a big move like this.

Romano also mentions that the work doesn’t stop here for Napoli. They’re looking for more attacking help from Sassuolo star Giacomo Raspadori. They’re also looking to upgrade the goalkeeper department with Keylor Navas of Paris Saint-Germain.
