Starlet in Demand

Middlesbrough right back Djed Spence is in demand. Having spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest, the youngster helped the Reds secure promotion to the Premier League via the Championship Playoffs at Wembley.

Forest had hoped to sign Spence permanently for their foray into the top flight, however, with Spurs also interested they face stiff competition. According to Romano, no agreement has yet been reached.

It is clear that Spence does not want to sign for a top-six club and then be sent out on loan again. The defender wants to play in the Premier League. Whoever signs the 21-year-old will have to ensure playing time at their ground. Nottingham Forest are still hopeful of signing Spence on a permanent deal now that they are in the top flight.

Spence may choose to move to London, as Spurs can offer Champions League matches having finished in the top four of the Premier League. Antonio Conte is looking to build a squad capable of competing in the Premier League and other prestigious competitions which could entice the youngster down to the capital.

Forest can guarantee at least one season of week-in-week-out Premier League football, and while this is attractive, it doesn’t live up to the prospect of Champions League football. Only time will tell what he chooses, with talks ongoing. Spence could stay at the ground where he has enjoyed so much recent success, or he could move elsewhere in the pursuit of greatness.
