Legendary Striker Set to Leave Manchester United While They Look for Young Star to Replace Him

Legendary striker

Manchester United are set to lose legendary striker Edinson Cavani at the end of the season, with the Uruguayan now highly unlikely to extend his current deal any further according to Fabrizio Romano. Cavani currently prefers a move to La Liga, with Barcelona having been reported to have registered an interest in him during the January transfer window just gone. While this may not be music to all of the Red Devils’ fans, this accompanies more positive news that could be highly exciting and provide success for years to come.

Legendary Striker Set to Leave Manchester United at End of Contract

Fan Favourite at Old Trafford but Struggling to Make an Impact This Season

Cavani’s endless attacking movement and flair have turned him into a fan favourite in his brief stay at the Theatre of Dreams. The striker’s attitude has also been praised during difficult times for the Manchester club.

Last season, the former Paris Saint-Germain attacker made 40 appearances under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and many of these proved memorable. The most notable was when his halftime introduction inspired a lacklustre United to a miraculous 3-2 comeback victory against Southampton, with Cavani scoring twice and assisting the other goal during this impressive display.

This campaign, though, injuries and availability issues have meant that game time has been much harder to come by for the 34-year-old. He has played for the Red Devils 15 times so far but has struggled to match his output from last season. Cavani has just two goals and an assist to his name since August, and with Cristiano Ronaldo now United’s starting striker, he has had to combat playing second fiddle to the Portuguese legend. The situation with Mason Greenwood alongside Anthony Martial’s temporary departure on loan with Sevilla could provide some extra minutes for Cavani, but he is still expected to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.

In more positive news for United fans, though, Ralf Rangnick confirmed on Friday night that the Red Devils would indeed be in for a young star striker in the summer transfer window, saying: “This is obvious. Cavani’s contract is running out in the summer and the club needs the best possible centre forward”.

With names like Erling Haaland available when the season ends, the Manchester club could end up with a fantastic player leading their line come the start of the 2022/23 campaign.
